Case Examples

  • A woman in her fifties was faced with filing for bankruptcy when her employer’s business was destroyed as a result of the 9/11attack.  JASSI informed her about Food Stamps and Medicaid.  JASSI also referred her to the appropriate agency for mortgage assistance and provided translation so that she could apply for other services.  Although she continues to visit JASSI for emotional support her life is now stable.  She says that she can smile again.
  • A corporate family living in New Jersey was contacted by the police because a neighbor had called in with a complaint of child neglect.  The wife had briefly left their sick child on his own.  They had recently moved from Japan and were not aware that a child could not be left alone.  JASSI intervened by speaking with the police chief and made him aware of the cultural differences. The couple was asked to write an affidavit which JASSI also helped to create.
  • A man called because his bank account had been frozen.  He had ignored a hospital operation bill from five years ago.  Not understanding the bill collection system, he had not responded to the hospital or the collection agencies, and ended up with a bill of $50,000.  JASSI negotiated on behalf of the man and was able to come to an agreement with a monthly payment plan to the hospital.
  • A woman who had lived in the same apartment for 30 years faced eviction for late payment of rent.  She was ill at the time, and asked JASSI for help.  JASSI accompanied her to housing court several times and succeeded in obtaining a “one shot” rental subsidy for her.  JASSI also helped her to obtain Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
  • A pregnant woman sought help because her partner was physically violent towards her. JASSI informed her about applying for an order of protection, and referred her to the appropriate agency for implementation of the order.
